Notes for week 12

This is the last week of this block and for the course.

There is no shortage of advice to be had online about developing your research agenda/trajectory and you can almost pick the article to suit your mood or biases. But in broad terms, the advice, again in great abundance online is to generate options, locate good mentors1, network well and know that accident, happenstance plays a bigger role than most would concede.

These two online posts capture a tiny part of the diversity of opinion about the academy, pathways and such.

Becoming autonomous written by Amy Loughman for the Research Whisperer blog captures something of the sense of what it is like at the beginning of the game.

This piece by Alice Dreger about the role of tenure and academic practice rehearses the arguments around the role of tenure.
